Bearded Dragon Tank Setup: The Complete Enclosure Guide (2026)

The bottom line: A bad tank setup is the #1 cause of health problems in captive bearded dragons. Get the tank right before bringing your dragon home — especially UVB and basking temperature, which affect digestion, bone health, and lifespan.

📏 Tank size by age

Bearded dragons need horizontal space more than vertical. A tank that is too small causes stress, stunted growth, and poor thermoregulation.

Material: PVC enclosures hold heat and humidity best and are the modern standard. Glass tanks work but lose heat faster and stress dragons from excess visibility. Front-opening doors cause less stress than top-opening.

💡 UVB lighting (non-negotiable)

UVB allows your dragon to produce vitamin D3 and absorb calcium. Without it, even a calcium-rich diet leads to metabolic bone disease.

Fixture: T5 HO (high output) linear fixture — far better than compact coil bulbs
Bulb: Arcadia 12% or Zoo Med ReptiSun 10.0 — sized to cover ⅔–¾ of the tank length
Distance: Mount inside the enclosure 12-18 inches above the basking spot. Follow the manufacturer's distance chart.
NO glass or plastic between bulb and dragon — UVB is blocked by glass/screens.
Schedule: 12 hours on, 12 hours off. Use a timer.
Replace every 6-12 months even if the bulb still lights — UVB output degrades before visible light does.

⚠️ Don't skip this: "But I dust with calcium with D3" is not enough. Oral D3 is poorly absorbed; UVB is the natural and reliable route. Skimp on UVB and your dragon will likely develop MBD within 1-2 years.

🔥 Basking heat & temperature gradient

Bearded dragons thermoregulate by moving between warm and cool zones. You need three temperature zones:

Night temperature can drop to 65–75°F (18–24°C) — no night heat needed unless your house is below 60°F
Use a digital probe thermometer (stick-on dial thermometers are inaccurate)
Heat source: halogen flood bulb in a ceramic dome on the warm side (avoid colored "night bulbs")
Plug all heat and light into a thermostat to prevent overheating and fires
Humidity target: 30–40% (measure with a hygrometer)

🌿 Substrate

Substrate is controversial. The #1 risk is impaction from loose substrate, especially in juveniles.

✅ Best choices

• Reptile carpet / non-adhesive shelf liner (safest for juveniles)
• Tile / slate (best for adults, easy to clean)
• Paper towels / newspaper (cheap, great for quarantine and babies)

🚫 Avoid

• Calci-sand (impaction risk, marketed as "safe" but isn't)
• Walnut shells, wood shavings
• Loose sand for any dragon under 1 year old
• Coconut coir for desert species (too humid)

🪨 Decor & hides

Basking platform — flat rock or slate tile directly under the heat bulb (helps trim nails and provides belly heat)
Two hides minimum: one on the warm side, one on the cool side. Same-size hides so the dragon doesn't choose security over correct temperature.
Climbing branches — bearded dragons are semi-arboreal and appreciate climbing
Food/water dish — shallow water dish (fresh water daily); food dish for salads
No "cozy" fabric hides — they catch claws and cause toe injury
