How to Tame a Bearded Dragon
Updated August 1, 2026
Good news: bearded dragons are one of the most docile pet reptiles. With patience, most become sweet, handleable pets that enjoy being held.
๐ First days with your dragon
Give your new dragon 1-2 weeks to settle in before handling:
- Don't handle them the first week
- Let them explore and get comfortable
- Sit near the tank so they see you
- Offer food from your hand
- Keep handling sessions short (5-10 min)
โ Basic handling
Do
- โข Approach from below
- โข Support the whole body
- โข Let them walk on your hands
- โข Wash hands before handling
- โข Move slowly and calmly
Don't
- โข Grab from above
- โข Chase them around the tank
- โข Hold too tightly
- โข Handle right after eating
- โข Handle during shedding
๐ Building trust
Trust is built through consistent, positive interactions:
- Hand-feeding: offer treats (waxworms, mustard greens) from your hand
- Sit with them: let them loose in a safe room while you read or watch TV
- Lap time: once calm, let them sit on your lap while you relax
- Consistency: short daily sessions beat occasional long ones
- Respect signals: if they puff up or darken, put them back
โ ๏ธ Problem behaviors
- Biting: usually food confusion โ wash hands, use tongs for feeding
- Tail whipping: they feel threatened โ give space
- Black beard: stress, fear, or illness โ check environment
- Running away: normal โ let them come to you
๐ Bathing together
Bathing is a great bonding activity. Warm (not hot!) shallow water to their shoulders. Most dragons relax and even enjoy it.
๐ณ Outings & travel
Once tame, bearded dragons can go outside (in warm weather) or to the vet. Use a secure carrier and avoid cold temperatures.
