Bearded Dragon Care Guide
Bearded Dragon Food List: What Can Bearded Dragons Eat? (Complete 2026 Guide)
Updated July 31, 2026 ยท Reviewed against captive reptile husbandry standards
The #1 rule: diet changes with age
The single most common feeding mistake is treating an adult bearded dragon like a baby. Newly hatched dragons need massive protein to grow, but adults are built to eat mostly plants.
| Age | Insects | Greens/Veg | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby (0-3 mo) | 80% | 20% | 2-3x daily |
| Juvenile (3-12 mo) | 70% | 30% | 1-2x daily |
| Subadult (12-18 mo) | 50% | 50% | Daily |
| Adult (18+ mo) | 20% | 80% | Every 2-3 days |
Overfeeding insects to adults causes obesity, fatty liver disease, and a shortened lifespan. If your adult dragon gets mostly bugs, slowly swap the ratio toward greens.
๐ฅฌ Best staple greens (feed daily)
These leafy greens are high in calcium and low in harmful oxalates โ the foundation of an adult's diet. Rotate several types for balanced nutrition:
- โ Collard greens โ excellent calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, the #1 staple
- โ Mustard greens โ high calcium, well accepted
- โ Dandelion greens โ nutritious, a natural favorite (use pesticide-free)
- โ Turnip greens โ great calcium source
- โ Endive / escarole โ good hydration and fiber
Chop greens to roughly the size of the space between your dragon's eyes (especially for babies). Lightly dust with calcium before serving.
๐ฅ Safe vegetables to mix in
โ Feed regularly
- โข Butternut squash (grated)
- โข Acorn squash
- โข Bell peppers (all colors)
- โข Green beans
- โข Cactus pads (nopales)
- โข Parsnip (grated)
- โข Snap peas
โ ๏ธ Occasionally (high oxalates)
- โข Carrots (grated, 1-2x/week)
- โข Sweet potato (cooked, rare)
- โข Kale (in rotation only)
- โข Broccoli (small amounts)
These bind calcium if fed too often.
๐ Fruits (treats only โ 5-10% of diet)
Fruit is candy for bearded dragons. Offer small pieces once or twice a week at most:
Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, papaya, mango, apple (seedless), peeled pear, and a tiny bit of banana. Always remove seeds/pits and chop small.
๐ฆ Best feeder insects
Insect quality matters as much as the greens. Always gut-load feeders for 24 hours before offering (feed them nutritious greens and a gut-load formula so the nutrition passes to your dragon). Never feed an insect wider than the space between your dragon's eyes.
| Insect | Use as | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dubia roaches | Staple | Best nutrition, low chitin, easy to keep |
| Black soldier fly larvae | Staple | Naturally high in calcium |
| Crickets | Staple | Affordable, gut-load well, but smelly/noisy |
| Hornworms | Treat/hydration | High moisture, great for underweight dragons |
| Mealworms | Occasional | Hard chitin โ impaction risk for babies |
| Superworms | Adult treat | Too large/hard for juveniles |
| Waxworms | Rare treat | Very high fat โ like junk food |
๐ซ Never feed these (toxic or dangerous)
- โ ๏ธ Fireflies / lightning bugs โ EXTREMELY toxic; even one can kill a dragon within hours
- โ ๏ธ Avocado โ toxic to reptiles
- โ ๏ธ Rhubarb leaves โ high oxalic acid, poisonous
- โ ๏ธ Any glowing insect โ luminescence signals toxicity
- ๐ซ Onion, garlic, chives โ damage red blood cells
- ๐ซ Citrus fruits โ too acidic, causes digestive upset
- ๐ซ Iceberg lettuce โ almost no nutrition, causes diarrhea
- ๐ซ Spinach โ calcium-binding oxalates (avoid entirely)
- ๐ซ Wild-caught insects โ parasites and pesticides
- ๐ซ Any human processed food, dairy, meat
๐ฆด Calcium & supplements
Even a perfect diet is not enough without supplementation. Without calcium and UVB, bearded dragons develop metabolic bone disease (MBD) โ a painful, often permanent condition.
- โข Most feedings: dust insects with calcium with D3
- โข 2-3x weekly: lightly dust salad with calcium without D3
- โข 1-2x weekly: dust with a reptile multivitamin (replaces calcium that meal)
- โข Provide strong UVB (T5 HO 10-12%) and replace bulbs every 6-12 months
๐๏ธ Sample daily feeding routine
- Morning: offer a fresh chopped salad (collard/mustard/dandelion greens + grated squash). Mist lightly.
- Midday: for young dragons, offer a bowl of properly-sized, calcium-dusted insects โ as many as they'll eat in 10-15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes: remove all uneaten insects (they bite and stress dragons).
- After 4 hours: remove uneaten salad so it doesn't spoil.
- Adults: skip insects 2-3 days per week; salad every day.
